ә`lis/a-lees/Alies
What’s in a name?
It looks a little strange. It is difficult to pronounce. It is my name. My grandmother, Alies Cutler Muskin, came to the United States from Russia at the turn of the 20th century. With the stroke of an Ellis Island immigration officer's pen, Алиса (Alisa) became A-L-I-E-S. My parents gave my grandmother's name to me in its newly created form.
Meet Alies
Alies Muskin is a proven leader and advocate for public education. Her qualifications to serve as a member of the Board of Education are many. At the local school level, representing families in the Einstein, Blair, Kennedy, and Northwood clusters, or participating on countywide committees, Alies collaborates with parents, teachers, students, support staff, and administrators to advocate for improved education for all students. Professionally, Alies continues her lifelong commitment to education at the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, a national mental health organization focusing on education and advocacy. Her two children, Emily and Melanie Rosenberger, are graduates of MCPS’ Woodlin Elementary School, Sligo Middle School, and Albert Einstein High School. An eight-year breast cancer survivor, Alies and her husband, Alfie Rosenberger, an anthropologist and college professor, live in Silver Spring with their Old English Sheepdog, Sheba.
